Study: Fish oil doesn't help prevent heart attacks
I think we have a pretty good idea that having chronic inflammation raises your risk of cardiovascular events. Having elevated C-reactive protein has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular events. However, taking various anti-inflammatory medicines, such as various fish oils, has not been shown to be beneficial in terms of reducing your risks of having a cardiovascular event. That is why I never suggest people start taking them. If the goal of taking such supplements is to protect yourself from having a heart attack, and there is no proof that taking them does so, why waste your money? I don't tell people not to take them, I just don't get enthusiastic about suggesting them.
